So. The dance. We "planned" our impromptu dance party just a few days before it happened. The goal was to set up camp in Upper Main Place on the UWP campus, start some music around the noon hour, and see if we could get some strangers to take a few seconds out of their stressful hump day to bust a move and just relax for a bit. We ended up with a large group of theatre students showing up to support us; they definitely kept the energy up, and helped get more people to stop and take in what was going on:
A few notes on this project -
1) We were able to completely stop a committee meeting with the Chancellor that was happening in the second floor conference room of the library. They spent a majority of the 20 minutes that we were dancing watching us from their window.
2) We had quite a number of bystanders - lots of people wanting to watch, but not participate. I tried getting a few of them to dance with us, asking them why they wouldn't/shouldn't/etc. One girl was watching for nearly the entire dance party. I asked her if she would dance: "No, no, I have a math test in fifteen minutes." I asked why that's any reason not to dance: "Because it's really stressful." I told her that's why she SHOULD be dancing: "I'm watching you guys dance and it's making me happy. That's all I need."
And THAT is what our project is all about.
We're trying to move forward now as the semester gets tougher, and our biggest goal now is to give our project as much exposure as possible. Creative publicity is on the way...

Love this! I just love what you guys are doing. Watching this made me smile, even though I'm sitting at my crummy job. I will try to do something to pay if forward here soon. But thanks. For real. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Anonymous! We're glad we could make you smile!
ReplyDeleteI loved watching this. Glad you were able to bring a bit of joy to people. Given that this is a bleak time of year, maybe it is time to do something similar - or this big - again?
